if it is the latter then try without the damping to see what the affect is and make a decision. This is what I did with mine and have never looked back. If it is the former then leave alone and enjoy. My advice would be to buy old and then the money you save could be used to send it to audio origami to get it upto current (and better) spec. It is all down to you, Does it sound fabulous now or is there something not sounding quite right. Invariably to our ears it usually sounded better and we never noticed it sound worse, when using the damping trough and paddle. ![]() I had never really thought about this before as in the shop if an arm came with damping it was always used but the one arm where we did compare with and without was the SME3009 which had the add on damping trough. I cannot help but wonder if the comments from those not using the damping is a "view" and I doubt any of them compared the cartridge AB with another identical TT arm and cartridge but without the damping applied. Cranfield did a lot of research developing the Rock with its front paddle system adjudging that most if not all cartridges benefit from damping and the best place of application according to them was at the cartridge point Īs with everything where there is an option - you need to try the options to see what works best for you. ![]() I do not know if the SME has different paddle options (as is the case with the Mission 774).
